Who knew that episode 2 could be as explosive and entertaining as what we the viewers witnessed last Wednesday night? Episode 2! We saw a plethora of personalities from most of the castaways, and I think that as this season progresses, it is only going to get better.
The episode begins with Espada trekking back to camp after their first visit to Tribal Council and voting their first tribemate, Wendy, out. We immediately hear from Holly, who is worried she is on the outs with them because of her hasty alliance with Wendy. But she has decided to rethink everything because, as she said, she would like to show everyone that she can kick their asses on Survivor. I love her positive attitude, and I hope she keeps it because she is going to need it throughout the game.
Morning arrives, and Jimmy J. and Marty are not happy that they haven't slept much. They have a group meeting to talk about working on a better shelter, and Jimmy J. takes charge. Jimmy T. then proceeds to add fishing to their long list of tasks to complete, but he is soon cut off by Tyrone, who speaks to him as though he is a five year old. "Jimmy T., we hear you. And it's a great idea. Now what were you saying, former NFL coach who I am star-struck by?" Of course Jimmy T. is upset by this.
Our first taste of the LaFlor tribe for this episode made me laugh. Kelly S., or "Purple Kelly", as they have chosen to call her, says, "I have never gone this long without a shower or brushing my teeth." And Fabio says, "I have." Wow, he could be one of my sons! Sash and NaOnka talk, and he lets her know that he is half black and would like to have all minorities at the end and that they should pull Brenda in with them. NaOnka seems to like that idea.
We return to Espada where Jill is eating some snails. Holly thinks they shouldn't be eaten. Now, for the record, I really love Holly. I recently met her, I consider her a personal friend of mine, and I love her. But as I watched her taking the pail of snails away from Jill and dumping them out, I was speechless. Why did she do that?! Her tribemates now think she has gone off the deep end, and that is not how you want to be perceived in this game.
And when Holly noticed Dan making fun of her, she wanted to get even with him. And what would be the best way to do that? By taking his $1,600 shoes, filling them with sand and letting them slowly sink to the bottom of the ocean. Again, I wasn't sure what to think. Was she digging herself a hole?!
When Dan notices his alligator shoes are missing, Holly has a breakdown. She admits that the game of Survivor might not be for her, so she decides to come clean about what she did and confesses to Dan that she took his shoes. He was not happy and said it's a good thing she isn't a guy. I think he wanted to punch her.
Back at the LaFlor camp, NaOnka, who I find to be very entertaining, goes off about one of her socks missing. So she finds someone else's pair of socks and takes them! Fabio finds out they are his so he and Nay clash about that. High school drama, as Alina says.
Holly and Jimmy J. have a talk with each other, and she confesses to him that she is unsure if she can continue with the game. But he gives her a pep talk and she decides to keep going. She says she has never quit anything in her life and I don't think she wants to quit anything now, either.
The challenge was a fantastic one! I loved it! One contestant from each tribe had to race through a mud pit and then into a stack of hay, searching for balls. Then three others had to bounce one ball at a time on boards from player to player until it landed in their barrell. The older tribe used thier medallion of power, which gave them the advantage of one ball already in their barrell. Kelly B. rocked it with her artificial leg, but in the end, Espada wins the challenge and fishing gear along with it. They also found a clue to the hidden immunity idol, which I quite honestly am getting tired of. I hope next season there are none so that the players can't rely on them for a change. Marty, Dan and Jill look for it and eventually find it.
LaFlor weighs their options of who to vote out at Tribal Council, and when they arrive there, all hell breaks loose. Jeff asks Shannon how it's been and he states that he hopes a certain person's girlfriend stands by him. He is referring to Chase, and the two young guys suddenly go off on each other and Tribal Council explodes with anger and accusations. Shannon surprises everyone by asking Sash point blank if he is gay, then proceeds to make comments about gay people that live in New York. Wow!
And for the second week in a row, a person's diarrhea of the mouth cost them a million dollars. Shannon was sent packing.
It's been exciting so far. I can't wait to see what is in store for us next week! I hope Kelly B. keeps a close eye on her leg!

Survivor Nicaragua episode 1
Breath-taking volcano shots, stunning wild animals and Jeff Probst's familiar voice can only mean one thing: the start of a new season of Survivor. The 21st season takes place in the country of Nicaragua, where the castaways immediately begin forming first impressions of each other. Mafia boss, leadership position, and "the guy with grey hair is already pissing me off" are a few of the descriptions we hear a few of them say.
After having the pleasure of listening to the beloved theme music (which turns out is the same as season 1), all 20 castaways gather on the beach in front of Jeff. He asks a few of them questions, and we learn that Kelly B. has a prosthetic leg but isn't ready to reveal that to anyone just yet. We also learn that Marty is less than enthusiastic about Jimmy Johnson being in the game.
And just like that, the game is on. Jeff announces that there is a Medallion of Power hidden near the lagoon. Whoever returns wearing it has a huge advantage in the game and claims it for their tribe. They then scramble, looking in all directions for it. Brenda spots it first and climbs the tree to retrieve it. Marty, thinking he is on her tribe, thinks it is a wonderful thing to win anything in this game. And that is when Jeff breaks it to them that the tribes will actually be divided a bit differently. He said 40 and over will comprise one tribe, and 30 and under would be the other one.
After dividing up and making it official with buffs, Jeff has yet another announcement. He tells Brenda that her team can keep the medallion of power or trade it for flint and fishing gear. The team discusses it and while they do, Yve says, "Decide, children." But they end up giving it up to Espada, the older tribe. Shannon reminds me so much of Ben from Samoa. He seems very cocky, and I think his mouth may just get him trouble in the very near future.
Holly and Wendy instantly bond and form an early alliance. Wendy is the type who talks too darn much, and that is a quality that won't take you far in the game of Survivor.
Jane impressed everyone right off the bat by starting Espada's fire and earning herself the nickname "Survivor McGyver."
LaFlor is the name of the younger tribe, and Jud has earned the nickname Fabio, and even though he is being made fun of, Jud doesn't seem to mind the name.
Kelly B. was paranoid about everyone looking at her leg, so she decided to let them all know why she has the limp. She called a group meeting and showed them her prosthetic leg. The tribe seemed cool with it.
Jimmy J. gets ill, and the next day he whines to his tribe about how rough the first 24 hours was for him.
Kelly B. and Alina find a clue to the hidden immunity idol and decide to share it, but Alina isn't happy about it. She isn't sure if she wants Kelly to be in the game very long because of the possible "sympathy" vote she could get.
Jimmy J. gives his tribe a speech. He says he is just there for the adventure because he knows he can't win. But he wants to help one of them win the million bucks. BLECHHHHH.
The first challenge of the season is an interesting one. One person stands at the top of a platform pouring water into sections of rain gutters that other tribe members have to hold in place. The water has to reach a certain level in the bucket in order to release a bag of puzzle pieces that the remaining people have to put together. Espada decided to use the Medallion, which would give them a full bucketful of water to start the challenge with. LaFlor released their bag of puzzle pieces first and Espada was close behind. LaFlor ended up winning.
Espada gets back to camp and has to make the crucial decision of who to vote out. Holly and Jimmy J. take a walk on the beach and talk about it. He tells Holly he thinks the two weakest players are himself and Wendy. Holly realizes at this point that she made a mistake aligning with Wendy so early.
They arrive at Tribal Council and endure Jeff's endless questions. Wendy begins talking and instantly annoys everyone. She ends up becoming the first person voted out.
The second episode looks muddy and explosive. And Jeff says something about whoop-ass? I can't wait!

How Survivor started
Who knew sitting in a rocking chair in the middle of the day could change your life?
I remember this day like it was yesterday. It was Spring 2000. I was sitting in my glider rocker feeding my baby his bottle. I had the television on and was flipping through the channels, hoping to find something interesting to watch. A commercial came on that caught my attention immediately. It was for a show called "Survivor". No actors would be on this show, just real, everyday people. They would be on a remote island with no food, they would be responsible for building their own shelter, and they would be surviving each other.
I was intrigued. I decided right then and there that I would be tuning in to see what this show was all about.
On the evening of May 31, 2000, I turned CBS on and watched this new show. Needless to say, I was fascinated. I had never seen anything like it before. Besides being thrown out in the middle of nowhere with a group of complete strangers, these people also had to compete in challenges, and at the end of every episode the losing tribe had to vote one of their own out.
By the end of the first episode I knew I had to watch the next one. I couldn't wait to find out who would be voted out next! And I did watch. I watched faithfully every week. I remember thinking how neat it was to have this "summer treat" to watch because at the time I thought that was all it was, a show that was just a special thing they were airing for the summer. Little did I know it would still be around ten years later!
I loved that first season, but I almost didn't tune in to the next one. I didn't think it would quite be the same. Well, it wasn't and yet it was. And by the third season I was hooked and still am. Survivor has brought us so many people to love, to hate, and to love to hate. And it is quite an honor to be part of the Survivor fan family. I have made so many wonderful friends online who share this same interest with me and can understand my excitement about it. I have no doubt these people will be friends for life, all because of a TV show.
And now we are coming upon yet another new season of the show, starting September 15th. I am very excited for it. There will be a whole new batch of people "surviving the elements and each other." I will be blogging each week about the episodes and giving my opinions on them. You won't want to miss that!
